TROPICAL SPRUE

Tropical sprue is a malabsorption disease commonly found in tropical region.


  • The cause of tropical sprue not known.it may be caused by 
                                                                           - E.coli
                                                                           - Klebsiella
                                                                           - Enterobacter

  • panintestinal involvement
  • Ileum > jejunum > Duodenum
  • most common malabsorption disease all over world
clinical feature:
  1. diarrhoea
  2. steatorrhoea
  3. weight loss/malnutrition
  4. fatigue
  5. vitamin B12 deficiency
diagnosis 
biopsy: 
A = NORMAL , B = TROPICAL SPRUE
  • villous atrophy
  • crypt hyperplasia
  • lamina propria infiltration
  • vacuolar degeneration of surface epithelium

serology -ve


treatment
  • antibiotics(TETRACYCLINE)
+
FOLIC ACID
